In Iceland Easter eggs are made of chocolate, some people will do the hand coloured variety but when you mention an Easter egg it is predominantly the chocolate variety. The candy factories start making these eggs just after they finish up their Christmas season and need to work full time until Easter (depending on when Easter is in the year) just to get the work done.
Icelandic Easter eggs vary in size, snack size eggs not much bigger then a standard chicken egg are popular, especially with people that want the pleasure of eating an obscene amount of eggs, excess is the Icelandic way. Bigger varieties are filled with all sorts of candy and frequently have a small figurine at the top of the egg, traditionally a chicken but in later years things such as Smurfs and other cartoonish characters have made an entry.
The eggs also contain a proverb. So in that respect they are much like fortune cookies. The proverbs are sometimes wise words from one of the family sagas, from the bible, Old Icelandic proverbs, or new fresh of the block proverbs. But they all have one thing in common; they can fit on a small piece of paper.
So in case anyone asks you why on earth you are eating one pound of chocolate you can say that you were looking for the proverb, after all learning something new is a virtue.
