This is Perlan (The Pearl) Reykjavik’s pride and joy. When the majority of City council (in the late 1980´s), with major of Reykjavik leading the way, decided to build Perlan it caused much controversy and arguments but over time the people of Reykjavik have learned to love this place and now mention it with pride. Perlan is built on top of a hill (ÖskjuhlÃð) in middle of Reykjavik. The foundations are hot water tanks that supply part of ReykjavÃk with their hot water for heating houses and such. On the ground floor of the building you can often find all kinds of markets like book market or CD´s on sale and sometimes exhibitions of all sorts. On 3d floor there is a coffeehouse and ice cream shop and you can go out on a balcony where the view is magnificent. At the top floor you will find a fine Ala Carte restaurant on a rotating platform. In the time it takes to eat your meal you’ll get 360° view of the Capital area and surroundings, which is a very nice way of spending an evening. Keep in mind though that this is not a low budget resturant, but well worth the price. On the bright side, if we consider the formula of H = P * Kr, your meal there should be quite healthy.
At the hillside of Perlan there is a artificial Geyser that at daytime sends it’s strokes of water a few meters up in the sky every 15 minutes or so. In the nighttimes it just sends up a mystic vapour and adds a little magic to the surroundings.
