Today is the first of summer according to the old Icelandic calendar.
The first of summer is always the third Thursday in April. It is a public holiday and is often celebrated with parades and other events. It is very common for people to buy flowers for their gardens or do some "summer like" activity even if it is only for the ceremony.
Old folklore states that if there is frost during the night between "winter" and "summer" then the summer will be good. We had frost last night so I expect a great summer. It is customary in Iceland to wish each other happy summer and today is a legal flag day.
Here are some pictures of one of the parades. The socialist party parked its big propaganda bus next to the events, oh well everyone wants the spotlight. People attending seemed to have a good time.
Wishing you a happy summer.
