At the National nature park of Þingvellir(an hour drive form ReykjavÃk) we have water filled fault called Nikulásargjá where travellers have been throwing coins in since 1907. The original name is almost forgotten now and the fault is commonly called Peningagjá (Money fault) it’s not like it’s a wishing well no the reason is that the water is so clear that you can watch your coin reach the bottom 25 meters below you. One of the reasons that no one has collected all the money is that the water is so cold (2-4° C) you don’t last in it for more than 3-4 minutes before hypothermia sets in,unless your wearing a proper diving suits. It’s also strictly prohibited to dive in the part where the money are and it’s likely that one will be discovered by park rangers before getting decent amount of money out of the water.
This is my second and last post about KrÃsuvÃk but I suspect that I will post more Hot spots later in the summer. I mentioned in my earlier post that the smell of sulphur is in the air but if you look closely you can see it crystallized around the cracks where the hot steam comes out of the earth. Other minerals also crystallize there but Sulphur has a distinct yellow colour and is easily recognized. Crystallized Sulphur
How does one know that spring has arrived in ReykjavÃk?? Well the migrating birds, the greenish colour that is starting to show on the trees and the odd daffodil in bloom are all tell tails of upcoming summer. But the definite sign that summer is lingering in the air are motorbikes. Motorbikes are a definite sign of summer in the winter only the toughest of bickers still dare to go out on their bikes. But as summer approaches they flock to the streets.
Annually on first of May the Icelandic motorcycle club Sniglarnir (The Snails) goes for a group drive around ReykjavÃk about 400 bikes participated in this event this time.
About 40 minute drive South West of ReykjavÃk you’ll find quite the hot spot named KrÃsuvÃk. There are no geysers there but hissing steam comes out of the earth, boiling clay springs, boiling water springs and the (not so) sweet smell of sulphur fills the air.
